Adventure 131 – Slug, What I thought we were hunting a cat?

Luceaturn – Dragonborn: Paladin (lvl 6)
Joe – Teifling:  Warlock (lvl 6)
Vailrah Standing Bear– Goliath: Fighter (lvl 6)
Varis – Elf: Druid (lvl 6)
Mittens – Tabaxi – Rogue (lvl 1), Ranger (lvl 5)

The party discusses where to start hunting for this large elusive cat creature that Dexter has requested us to find.  All the party remembers him saying was that it was someplace north. So they start heading that way. They march out across the grassland. The ranger and druid try to find traces and or tracks from this supposedly elusive cat.  After a while they find where the grass has been distrubed that looks like something large has jumped into the area and then bounded off. With trouble the party is able to loosely follow trail where they find what looks like it attacked a wide ox or cattle like creature based on the tracks even though there is no carcass just a spray of blood.  Tracking the path more makes the party think it was heading to a bluff / cliffs that are about a couple of miles ahead. Along the way they find a ball of hide and bones. This put into question did the creature hack this up or was this more of a trap that is set. With vultures flying around they don’t seem to get attacked on approaching this sight.  A little while longer and it starts to rain and the sky gets dark. This is when the party first get a glimpse of the creature. The druid tries to point it out and what most of the party sees is a large eight legged cat like creature. It seems to be changing color to help it blend into the surroundings. It loops around and attack the Dragonborn and bounds off in a quick move. The wounds inflicted on Luceaturn don’t seem to coagulate.  The Druid, Ranger, and Warlock gets shots off. They seem to hit it and do at least some damage. Vailrah tries to tant it to get it in closers but this seems to have driven it off. The party searches around but can’t pick up the tail. So they head toward the cliffs and see a cravos in it so they decide to head toward that. Thinking this could be where the creature lives or possibly other things could use the ledges to ambush thing that enter the cravos, they decided to climb up the ledge to the side.  On getting to the top they see some woods a little ways off and some rocks in the other direction. But otherwise it seems to be rolling hills of grasslands. They get closer to the edge of the cravos and see that it tappers up and could be used a tail to get across the cliffs. They also see what they think is claw marks but no creature or trail.  

The party seem to think the woods will give them some cover in the rain.  So they head off in that direction and when they come to the edge of the woods see a long mond of bones that the party has to cross to get into the woods.  The Tabaxi does not like the look of the woods but is convinced to follow the party in. After a short trek and following some drag marks the party find that creatures have surrounded them in the trees.  These creatures turn out to be half monkey, half spider. They start throwing poo at the party members. Vailrah once again taunts her enemies to get them to get in melee range. This time it works and several of them come down.  This gives Luceaturn and her ability to engage them, while the others shoot the one in the trees. Mittens and Varis manage to get hit by the awful smelling poo goo. Vailrah find that the blood and smashed carcass create a sticky mess that slows her movement to circle around to help out the rest of the party.  But as she is doing this they seem to be retreating and something large is moving toward the group from the direction of the drag marks. This is when a giant slug like creature emerges from the tree growth. It targets the ones that have been hit with poo. Mittens is the one that gets hit with a harpoon like touge.  It starts to drag the Tabaxi into its mouth. Mittens manages to cut partly through the touge and then break away from the slug but not before he is covered in mucus. Varis changes into a giant snake and bites the slug and then wrapping it up in a constrictor grasp. But due to the mucus filling the mouth of the snake and flexibility of the slug it manages to squeeze out. It did not make it much longer before the party is able to strike it down. 

Mittens wants to leave but the party keeps going to the home of this slug hoping there will be some kind of loot.  They follow the trail back to an ancient burial mound that has been partially uncovered. They go in and see a couple of corpses at the end of the rock covered entry.  On the way in two small slugs fall and land on Vailarh and Luceaturn’s backs. The Dragonborn reaches up and gets his hands stuck in its mouth, then slam it against a wall.  Vailrah trys to poor salt water on it but it seems to miss the creature. But they are soon killed by the rest of the party. The party find some ancient gold coins and Joe finds a magic dagger.
