Party Members:
Hammar – 3rd Level Cleric
Cloverdung – 3rd Level Ranger
Kavis – 3rd Level Fighter
Othello – 3rd Level Thief
Gubikla – 3rd Level Magic User
The adventurers start in the city, waking up at their inn. Except for Bone who decided to sleep for a few days. Othello, during breakfast, receives word from Borris that the other silver amulet we discovered needs to be given to him because of danger. The messenger places the amulet into a container and seals it shut, tells us to meet Borris at midnight, then leaves. Weird, right?
Shortly, another messenger appears. This time to inform Cloverdung that the Bailiff needs to see him right away. There has been a murderrrrr in town. So, everyone follows along to see who has been murdered. Once arriving at the Bailiff, he informs the group that he thinks something unnatural has killed the sheriff. While the sheriff returned to town wounded from his last mission, the wounds were not fatal. The Bailiff wants us to do this quietly so the town does not start to panic. Investigation time.
The clan heads to the sheriff’s house, but is abruptly stopped from entering by Cloverdung. He wishes to examine all entrances into the buildIng before going in. He is looking for hobbit tracks. Amazingly, Cloverdung does find some hobbit tracks leading from the wall of the Sheriff’s house to the guardhouse. While Cloverdung checks out the roof of the guardhouse, Kavis and Othello go into the Sheriff’s house, looking for ……. clues, yeah, clues.
The group then decides to investigate the body of the Sheriff, which is still in the bed. Cloverdung searches for red hair around the body. Boom! Some red hair is found. Hammar asks why all the questions about hobbits and red hair. That is when Cloverdung informs the others that there was a rumor of Nitty Sharpstick, red-haired hobbit assassin, in town looking to kill the Sheriff. The Bailiffs suspicions are confirmed once Cloverdung finds the thin, silk thread leading from the ceiling to the lips of the deceased. Poisoned. A sample of the thread is collected for evidence.
The groups agrees that we should stage like the Sheriff is leaving town with some guards, until we can catch the killer. The Bailiff agrees with this plan, especially since he fears he is next on the assassins list, so he sets up the tax wagon to be delivered the next day with a host of guards.
Meanwhile, the party has a meeting at midnight with Borris. The group goes to the location, a bar, where Borris is to be met. Upon entering the bartender asks the dwarves if they would like a drink. Othello has the elvish drink, which partially blinds him. Kavis has the stout and then tries the elvish drink. It only tingles a little. The bartender then points us to a door leading to where Borris is waiting.
We all sit around the table with Borris who begins to explain that the silver amulets taken from some recent kills are a special moon lead. It allows the creator to be able to control and see what the wearer does and sees. Borris will work on a way to shield us from the view of the creator while we go retrieve a magic staff from an old abandoned wizard tower.
So, we agree to find the staff but first send off the dead Sheriff and look for Sharpstick on the way out of town. Cloverdung dresses in the Sheriff’s uniform and proceeds to lead the wagon out of town. After a few miles, he will double back and meet up with the others.
The other party members have started their hobbit search at the stockyards, just outside of town. Some members almost lose their lunch from the stench but it is discovered that Sharpstick is not at the stockyards. They are advised to check the slaughterhouse. Once here, Kavis does lose his lunch. Sharpstick is no longer around but was known to be headed to the tanner. The prty heads that way and discovers that Sharpstick was at the tanners, but only for supplies before heading into town.
Suddenly, Gubikla decides we should stake-out the Bailiff’s house in hopes of catching the assassin try to kill him.
The adventurers carefully select their hiding spots: Kavis is in the nearby watch tower, othello is in a barrel, Gubikla is against a building watching the front gate, Hammar is against a building watching the other side, and Cloverdung is in the closet within the Bailiff’s bedroom. And they wait.
Othello sees someone fling a rope onto the roof of the Bailiff’s house and climb up. While attempting to follow silently, Othello rolls poorly on his sneak check as he is climbing the rope. Suddenly, a hand appears from the rooftop and cuts the rope. Splat! Othello takes damge from the fall. The assassin then climbs down from the roof and heads for the wall. Hammar steps out of the shadow to stop the assassin. Hammar flings his sap, to no avail. The assassin sticks Hammar with his poisonous daggers. Hammar survives the poison but feels weekly after taking a critical. The assassin notices others with Hammar, he decides to scale the wall and flee.
Cloverdung sticks his head out of the closet and asks if anything has happened yet. Obviously, Cloverdung had fallen asleep. The group tracks the hobbit assassin towards a well within the market district inside town. Trail lost, people hurt, everyone tired, they all decide to retire to the inn for some rest.
Waking up later that evening, the group decides to try another stakeout. This time, oil is spread on the roof and window seals of the Bailiff’s house. Hopefully, this will slow down the assassin. Party members position themselves a little differently this time. Othello is in the watch tower, Kavis is on the city wall, Hammar is next to the holding cell, Gubikla is near the wall and holding cell, and Cloverdung is across the street in a church.
Around 3am, Cloverdung notices a drawf walking down the main street. Noticing that it is very late and the dwarf is not drunk, Cloverdung equips his bow and notches an arrow. Still watching the dwarf, Cloverdung sees him peel off the road towards the Bailiff’s house. As the dwarf is closer the wall, he removes his disguise, revealing a red-headed hobbit beneath the outfit.
Cloverdung waits for the assassin to reach the top of the wall and then fires his arrows. One strikes the assassin and causes him to fall inside the walled area around the Bailiff’s house. Hammar then chases towards the assassin (the wrong way around the building) while Gubikla is stabbed in the back by the assassin. Gublika survives the poison saving throw and damages the assassin. Hammar finally makes it to the action and successfully throws a hold person spell on the hobbit.
The group presents the assassin to the Bailiff. Hammar casts his zone of truth. Everyone begins to ask the assassin questions: Who hired you? Who is on your kill list? How do you communicate with who hired you? Where were you hiding? What is your favorite color? And so on. We are awarded gold for the capture of the assassin (and learn of a higher reward in the coastal town nearby).
