While sleeping in the tower, Kavis apparently slipped out to get some ale. The party decided to continue on without him.
The group entered the elevator and proceeded upward. Upon reaching the top of the elevator shaft, the characters werr greeted with an audible request for a password. Being who they are, the party exited the elevator and proceeded on with care. Ignorance is bliss.
As the group exited the elevator, they notcied the room was circular in shape, with several masks hanging on the wall. Suddenly, some of the masks began to glow and spring from the wall to attack the group. There were various colored masks approaching (yellow, green, red, blue, white). The group huddled in a circle and were surrounded by Mocking Masks. Suddenly, characters were taking damage from acid, fire, lightning, frost. Hammar was having the toughest time of all, because he was unable to hit the masks. A wave of masks would be defeated to only find another round attack the group. By the end, the party had sustained moderate damage and there were pieces to 30 dead Mocking Masks all over the floor.
There was a small spiral staircase headed up. Othello lead the way to the top, where there was a small trap door. Upon opening the door, it was revealed to lead into a small 8ft x 8ft room. Othello was able to find a hidden door that opened into a very large room. After exiting the small room, it was discovered that the group had found a secret door on a large sarcophagus on the floor. The only thing in the room was a ladder, hanging fromt he ceiling. It did not reached to the floor, about 10 feet short, so Cloverdung offered to throw Othello up to the ladder. Othello agreed. Woosh. Othello flew up and was able to grab the bottom rung of the ladder. However, his hands were stuck to the bottom rung, like glue. As Othello struggled to free his hands, the ladder started to pull itself up. As the ladder reached the ceiling, it was seen to have coiling up into a chest on the ceiling. Then the chest, with Othello stuck to the bottom of, fell 30 feet to the floor, damaging and pinning Othello udnerneath. AS everyone else was watching in amusement and amazement, Othello struggled to free himself. The others did not know what to do because they did not want to get stuck as well. Othello finally freed one hand, reached his poisonious dagger and stuck the chest. The Mimic was succefully paralyzed by the purple worm goo on the dagger blade.
To try and rebuild Hammar’s self-esteem, the group decided to let him kill off the paralyzed Mimic. After several rounds of Hammar not connecting or not doing any damage, the others joined in before the paralysis could wear off the Mimic. Where the Mimic had been attached to the ceiling was discovered a trap door by Othello. Cloverdung used his floating glove to open the door, noticed to be trapped by Othello. A blast blew debris all over the room wihtout much damage to anyone. The group attaches a rope and climbs up to the next room.
The party notices a spiral staircase along the wall of the tower wall, heading up. The group begins advancing up the stairs when Othello sets off an exploding step. Now knowing there were traps on the stairs, Othello began to proceed up the srtairs, slowly. Cloverdung was inpatient, so he begged Hammar for one of his smallberris. Hammar agreed and Cloverdung threw the small stone near the top of the stairs. As if began to roll down each step, it enlarged to boulder size. Upon reflection, Cloverdung and the others should have climbe down from the stairs before launching the boulder because it was now headed their way, with speed, setting off various traps as it rolled over each step.
Othello was able to avoid the boulder. Hammar took some damage as he decided to try and dodge the boulder. Cloverdung jumped ontop of it (to ride like a barrel), while Bubikla cast Thunderclap to change the path of the large stone. Boom! The boulder was pushed off the stairs, falling 30 feet down to the floor, while Cloverdung was riding on top of it. As the boulder smashed through the floor, taking out the elevator, Cloverdung was able to jump off and land on solid floor. Clang, clang, crash, clang was heard as the boulder and the elevator feel down the long shaft, to the cavern below.
With the traps cleared, the group finally makes it to the top of the stairs and opens a door in the ceiling. Bam, the party find themselves on the outside of the tower, at the very top. Where they were just a day ago. Crap! No staff found, just a path through the tower, from top to bottom.
With frustration, the group look around. It is now night and they can see, off in the distance several campfires, with figures walking around them. The group decide to backtrack into the tower for something they might have missed.
Finding their way back down to the room with the masks on the wall, Othello finds a secret door behind one of the masks. Upon opening the door, Othello is turned into a poodle. Hammar has a dispell magic scroll, but takes a while in deciding which to dispell, the door or Othello. Finally, Hammar casts the dispell magic spell on Othello and returns him to a gnome. Slightly better than a poodle, but good to have Othello back. Apparently, the door is no longer trapped either, one shot deal. When the door is opened, the group goes out and notices they are at the ground level of the tower, inside the iron wall.
Totally frustrated, Cloverdung tries to rip the door of its hinges. after getting his head stuck in the door, he finally beats it into a non-operational mode. The party decide to flip off the tower and see what the campfires are about.
Gubikla makes himself invisible and sneaks towards the closest fire. He sees goblins and wargs around the fires. Gubikla returns to tell us the news. The party decides to go back to the boat, while hoping it is still there.
As they approach the boat in the darkness, Gubikla notices there are goblins on board, try to hid for an ambush. As Cloverdung tries to sneak up to the boat, he steps on a twig, breaking it and alerting the goblins that something is out there. In an effort to try and seem like an enemy, Cloverdung, speaking in goblin, makes a comment about taking a shit. The goblins on the boat do not buy it and fire arrows towards the sound of his voice. Crap, a few arrows find their mark and damage Cloverdung quite smartly. The otheres let loose with their spells and weapons, killing a few of the goblins. A horn can be heard being blasted by one of the goblins on the boat. Great. There will soon be other goblins from the campfires now. With a couple more rounds trading fire, all of the goblins on the boat are finally killed.
As soon as the party takes a breath from the encounter, they hear wargs approaching, fast. Cloverdung jumps on board, loosing one of the ropes tied to the shore. Othello and Gubikla follow. By the time Cloverdung is cutting the last rope holding the boat to the shore, Hammar decides to get on as well. The sail is let down and as the boat begins to float upstream, towards town, the wargs arrive on the bank, with goblin riders. The goblins fire a few arrows, but no hits.
As the boat sails further upstream, by the tower on the hill, a large gropup of goblins can be seen waiting on the bank, with bows and spears. The goblins fire a few shots, but then Gubikla catches several of them in his web spell. To cover the escape, Cloverdung casts fog cloud to block their vision as the party slips upstream, out of danger.
Once the group makes it back to town, they unload and are greeted by the local sailors. The sailors notice we have some parts from the dead serpent and a reward is collected. The group then meets with Borris to talk about not finding the staff. Hammar gives the all seeing orb to Borris, but not before just sticking it in his face for the wizard on the other end to try and blast Borris with a lightning spell. Borris takes the orb and provides a little more information about the lady wizard who used to live in the tower. It is her staff we are trying to find, a staff of power.
The party decides to rest and level up before proceeding further on this quest.
