Adventure 19

Party Members:
Hammar – 5th Level Cleric
Cloverdung – 5th Level Ranger

Gubikla – 5th Level Magic User

We find our adventurers staring at a black, cubed block, holding a demon inside. While Othello tries to find a way in, everyone else is looking over the map to find our way out. All except Kavis. He has drank all his ale and curled up for a nap in the corner.

The group finally convinces Othello to leave the cube alone and the party exits the dungeon. Upon reaching the surface, Cloverdung decides to climb the tall tower in the middle of the abandoned fort and survey the surroundings. As Cloverdung is looking around, he notices two groups of creatures eating on the remains of the orc bodies lying around. After Cloverdung shouts to the others what he sees, Othello decides to grapple one of the wall towers with his climbing rope. He is content to leave the creatures alone and make a quiet exit. That is when Cloverdung shoots one of the creatures with an arrow. Othello quickly climbs his rope to the wall tower, Gubikla follows Othello and Hammar advances on the creatures. Cloverdung scores with more arrows and kills one of the raptors. Gubikla joins in by damaging a raptor, thus drawing attention to himself. Hammar moves in to attack and does little damage. Two raptors surround Hammar, knocking him down and doing a lot of damage. Two other raptors charge towards Othello and Gubikla, with one raptor allowing the other to climb his back and jump into the wall tower; face to face with the thief and wizard. Cloverdung kills one of the raptors on Hammar while Hammar touches himself to cure wounds before being killed. Meanwhile, Gubikla is getting chewed up by a raptor. Right before Gubikla is about to be eaten, he jumps from the tower and goes invisible before hitting the ground. Othello decides to run along the wall towards the next tower, hoping to sneak away. The raptor sees Othello and jumps him, knocking them both down to the ground. Hammar now feels better but suddenly feels the raptor’s teeth bite him for more damage. Hammar smacks the creature to the ground with his hammer. Othello pulls out his paralyzing dagger and sticks the raptor, causing it to freeze in place. Cloverdung kills the last raptor. While Gubikla makes his way around the fort wall back to the front. Hammar heals himself and Othello. Cloverdung says, “That went well.”

With everyone cured up, the group decides to follow the road North, towards a castle that is supposed to contain a book they need for a quest. After a couple of miles travel they decide to camp and regain spells. After the rest, they press onward. Cloverdung comes across some tracks that appear to have been made by injured orcs who had fled the fort during their battle. The tracks peel off of the road right before the destroyed bridge that crosses a river. Cloverdung follows the tracks to a ford across the river a couple miles from the bridge. As the party approaches the ford, there are two dead orcs displayed on a couple of large stakes. Apparently, a sign to discourage other orcs from crossing.

Cloverdung decides to lead the group across the river. After emerging on the other side, Cloverdung begins to advance on a nearby forrest. Suddenly, an arrow strikes his chest. Cloverdung shouts “Hey, you dropped this!” There is no sign of where the arrow came from so Cloverdung begins to run through the tall grass, parallel to the forrest, to see what he can draw out. The others see movement in the woods and begin to advance. A few more arrows fly towards Cloverdung and then a centaur comes running out of the woods with a lance, charging. Cloverdung casts spiked growth in front of him and draws his sword and shield. As the centaur charges through the spiked growth taking damage, Cloverdung is pierced with the lance. Hammar charges towards the centaur. Gubikla casts scorching ray and hurts the centaur. Othello sneaks up on the others in the woods and attacks with his crossbow. Arrows start flying all around and the centaur out in the open is killed by Cloverdung. As Hammar dives for cover, he quickly searches the dead centaur. Gubikla, tired of the hiding attackers casts a fireball into the woods. Blam! Well, kind of. The fireball only does 13 points of damage. However, it is effective enough to scare off the other attackers.

With smoldering trees and spells depleted, the group again decides to make camp. Hammar leads them back across the ford in the river and make camp. During the night, Gubikla decides to kill a skunk that enters camp while the other are sleeping. As the sun begins to rise the next morning, a large raptor attacks. After going for Hammar, the raptor decides to focus on Cloverdung. With much damage taken by Cloverdung, the raptor is finally killed by Cloverdung. As it falls, Cloverdung barley rolls out of the way.

After a short discussion, the party decides to get back on the main road and head towards the castle, leaving the woods and the attackers for later. After a few miles travel, Cloverdung spots a flying creature landing on top of an outcropping. As the group tries to walk around the structure, a pair of griffons come diving down, in attack formation. One goes for Cloverdung and the other for Hammar. Hammar is able to fling his throwing axe 100 feet to strike one of the creatures. The hippogriffs close and begin clawing and biting. Finally, the party is able to kill them off without taking too much damage.

Othello and Cloverdung climb the rock structure, while Hammar fails. At the toP is a nest with three eggs. The rest of the party finally make it to the nest and Gubikla stores the eggs in his hole. Cloverdung looks around, from this high poimt, and sees a castle several miles to the North. The party decides to camp here and wait for Kavis to catch up to them.
