Adventure 21
Party Members:
Hammar – 5th Level Cleric
Cloverdung – 5th Level Ranger
Othello – 5th Level Thief
Gubikla – 5th Level Magic User
So, our adventurers wake up after a nice rest in their newly discovered keep. Before they went to bed, Gubikla had found a note near the remains on some dude who was obliterated from within the pentagram something about needing to take some remains back to the sacred temple in town so the sorcerer could be restored. Kavis decides to stay behind and clean up a little. Wash the floors, clean the dead body remains from the rooms, clean the windows, all the things dwarves are good at doing.
Before heading out, the guys take one more look in the pentagram room. Hammar discovers something metallic stuck in the ceiling. After determining the item is not magical, Cloverdung wants to just leave it. However, Hammar wants to know what it is. So, Cloverdung uses his magic glove to remove the piece from being lodged in the ceiling. It is a finger guard, with a portion of a finger bone still in it. Cloverdung keeps the bone but gives the finger guard to Hammar. He is happy now. Othello finds another finger guard stuck in the ceiling for Cloverdung to retrieve. This time, Cloverdung keeps the finger guard and gives the bone to Othello.
The party heads North, towards the castle where the green light was shining the night before. They head out in diamond formation, Cloverdung leading the way through the tall grass. As they approach a slight hill, a group of 5 ogres appear from the ridge and spring down upon our heroes. Cloverdung pelts one with arrows, Hammar bashes on one, Othello hits one with his crossbow and then Gubikla casts fireball. However, the ogres are still standing and deal out some damage to the party members. Gubikla takes a few big blows. Finally, the party is able to take down all of the ogres and root around for whatever treasure they were carrying.
The group continues northward. They come up to a tree that appears to have been stricken by lightning a while ago. Hammar reaches into a crack in the tree and retrieves a handful of nuts. That’s nothing new for him so he is not impressed. The party moves on.
Suddenly, Gubikla, walking in the back of the group takes damage (almost dies) and loses 2 points from all of his abilities. The others search in vain for what could have caused this but there is nothing to be seen. Hammar applies some cures to Gubikla but he continues to have damage to his abilities.
The party sees, about a mile away, a castle in the distance. They believe it to be the one they have been searching for. Hammar and Gubikla sit down in the field of tall grass about 3/4 of a mile from the castle. Othello sneaks through the tall grass up to the bridge leading over the moat. While Othello is at the moat, he discovers a green blob of something on the castle wall. He does not see and people or creatures along the wall or in the towers. He watches the green blob long enough to decide that it moved. Not as one big mass, but rather as a group of a lot of little things appearing to be one thing.
Cloverdung catches up with Othello and decides that someone needs to go across the bridge to see what is inside. As Cloverdung, sword and shield drawn, is lurking over the bridge, the green mass suddenly starts moving along the wall towards the gate where Cloverdung is headed. Othello fires a bolt at the green blob, but it separates where the bolt would have hit and then closes back up after the bolt bounces off the wall. Being a little freaked out, Cloverdung activates the flying on his shield and floats 65ft straight up into the air. The green blob splits into two bodies, one headed towards Othello across the bridge and the other begins to fly towards Cloverdung. Othello takes off running back towards Hammar and Gubikla while Cloverdung begins to fly that way as well. Cloverdung is able to fly faster than the green blob chasing him, however, Othello’s little legs cannot out pace the green blob chasing him. To slow down the greenies, Othello drops a small fire-spitting spinning toy. This distracts the greenies for a short while so Othello has gained a little ground. But, the greenies begin chasing him again and will catch up soon. With about a 1/2 mile still to go, and Hammar and Gubikla just sitting there waiting for something to happen, Cloverdung decides to try and swoop up Othello. As Cloverdung is flying down to grab Othello, Cloverdung miss-times his grasp and overshoots Othello. With the greenies approaching Othello again, Cloverdung tries one more pass. This time he grabs Othello under the arms and hoist him to his back as he lays out to fly towards Hammar and Gubikla. As Gubikla sets up as a rear gunner with his hand-crossbow, the greenies flying after them suddenly turn around and go back to the castle.
Cloverdung and Othello make it back to the others and land safely. Hammar is like “What’s up?” and Gubikla is all “My head hurts.” The party decides to make camp since it will be dark soon. In order to make a safer camp site, Hammar casts his Sacred Flame several times to burn out a clearing in the tall grass. Hopefully, this will allow the person on watch to catch anything trying to sneak up on them during the night. As Cloverdung is on first watch, he turns around to see a giant brown bear sniffing around Hammar’s crotch. Cloverdung finally decided he should stop the bear before he became even more friendly with Hammar by sticking the bear with his sword. A couple of smacks and the bear ran off in shock. Cloverdung goes back to guard duty and then wakes Othello when it is his turn to take over. During Othello’s watch, he sees flicker of green lights off in the distance at the castle. He also sees various shadow figures flying around. While watching the castle more, he is surprised to find an injured brown bear sniffing the back of his neck. Turning around to greet the bear face to face, Othello takes off across the campsite. As the bear chases him, Cloverdung is awakened by the bear paws stepping all over him. Othello stops his run, turns and attacks the bear. The bear tears into Othello and even Hulk Smashes his head. Cloverdung provides some assistance but it is Othello that brings the beast down finally.
After skinning the bear, Othello and Cloverdung try to decide how to cook it for breakfast. While they are standing there, they suddenly hear a pair of voices from just outside the campsite. Hiding behind the bear carcass, Othello and Cloverdung see a pair of trolls approach the campsite. They seem very interested in the dead bear because they are hungry. Cloverdung releases a few arrows from behind the dead bear and sticks one of the trolls. Othello hits with his bolt as well. The one troll stops in amazement as he thinks a dead bear just shot him with arrows. The other troll runs in and tosses the dead bear onto Cloverdung and Othello. Taking a small amount of damage, Othello and Cloverdung holler for the other to awake and help kill the trolls. With the entire party fighting the creatures, they are able to bring them down. However, Hammar is not quick enough to burn the dead bodies before the trolls regenerate and spring back up to fight some more. Finally, Hammar is able to use his Sacred Flame to completely kill the trolls.
The party decides that the castle is not the place for them to go at the moment and decide to get Kavis to go back to town and see about doing something with the bone-finger remains.
