Adventure 22
Party Members:
Hammar – 5th Level Cleric
Cloverdung – 5th Level Ranger
Othello – 5th Level Thief
Gubikla – 5th Level Magic User
After getting their asses handed to them at the castle with the green bugs, the party decides to head back to town. Gubikla has a finger he needs to restore. The group stops to check on Kavis at the knobby-hill keep. He is sound asleep so the party proceeds on to town without him.
As the party enters town, everyone has an errand to complete. Hammar shops for a place to begin building his temple in town. He makes a down payment on some lots. His goal is to piss off the larger temple that is already in town. Othello runs out to an animal trainer that lives near farmer Pick. He gives the animal trainer his hippo-griffon egg and asks him to train it so Othello can ride it once grown. Cloverdung heads out of town to the naked lady in the pool, Nymawma, to give her his hippo-griffon egg so she can raise it to help protect her home; along with the owlbear. She is not around so Cloverdung leaves the egg, safely tucked away, with a note attached. Gubikla finds the temple he was searching for and presents the finger bone he had found. The acolyte takes the finger and tells Gubikla to come back in three days.
So, the group spends the next three days staying drunk and intoxicated. After three days, the party heads to the temple. When they arrive, the acolyte presents Helfling to the group. He is where the finger came from. The temple priests were able to resurrect his body from the remains. Helfling makes an offer to the party. He requests his spell-book returned to him and in exchange the party can have the knotty-hill keep for their own.
The party agrees and Helfling instructs Gubikla on how to enter the secret basement where his spell-book is kept. Gubikla tells the party he has the instructions and is ready for the trip.
As the group is about to leave town, someone decides that the party should take a wagon so they can travel more comfortably. Then, someone else decides to mount their ballista in the wagon. Then, someone decides that they should hire a couple of dancers to ride in the wagon with the party. Cloverdung is able to talk a couple of dancers into doing this only because he rolls a 20 on his persuasion check.
Finally, the group has their wagon, pulled by two horses, with a couple of dancers. Gubikla is driving, Hammar is riding with him. Othello is on his ballista while Cloverdung is admiring the dancers in the back of the wagon.
Everything is going swell, until the group comes upon a dark cloud forming out the ground. Gubikla stops the wagon while the others watch. Suddenly, the cloud dissipates and there hovers a giant mosquito, with glowing red eyes. Cloverdung and Hammar get out of the wagon to attack. Othello fires a ballista and damages the creature. Gubikla holds the reigns and watches. The mosquito pierces Cloverdung in the chest so Cloverdung chops off the mosquito’s stinger. Hammar wales the critter. By now, the horses have become frightened and start running away, with Gubikla not able to control them, Othello bouncing around in the back. While the dancer girls are screaming their heads off. Finally, Hammar kills the mosquito. It takes a bit of curing to stop the bleeding for Cloverdung. The stinger had penetrated deeply. Gubikla finally reigns in the horses and Cloverdung and Hammar get back in to continue the trip.
The group reaches the knobby-hill keep and park the wagon. The dancers are let into the keep while Gubikla looks over his notes on how to enter the secret basement. As Gubikla is reviewing his notes, he suddenly realizes he does not remember which secret phrase does what. So, he picks one of the two written down and a swirling dimension door appears in the foyer.
The group climb through and are at a landing with a set of stairs leading up and a set leading down. Cloverdung listens and no sound is coming from the upstairs. When listening to the bottom stairs, he hears a voice say “brute?”. So, the group heads downstairs.
Since is is Gubikla’s quest, we let he lead. Being cautious, he de ides to have one of the dancers walk in front of him. About halfway down the stairs, the dancer steps on a fire trap that fries her crisp. Before she is completely burned to ashes, Gubikla quickly casts frost bolt to put out the fire. Needles to say, the dancer is quite dead. We leave her there and Othello clears the rest of the way down.
The stairs end at a doorway that leads into what appears to be a pantry. There is fresh food on the shelves, even some pies. While the party is trying to eat their weight in food, a voice is heard saying “brute?”. The party draws their weapons when, slowly, a flesh golem comes creeping around the back shelf. He keeps repeating “brute?”, so Cloverdung responds with “eturb?”. Nothing happens so the party attacks. Hammar and Othello hit the creature for some damage. Gubikla throws a vial of flesh-eating acid onto it, which starts to melt its feet. Cloverdung whacks off an arm and then as it melts in the acid some more, Hammar delivers the crushing blow to kill it.
Hammar goes and casts revivify on the dead dancer to bring her back to life. While the group is collecting themselves after this encounter, Kavis comes running down the stairs screaming that he smells pie.
